AA Varsity Girls Win Conference Game
2012, Jan 9 – The Amelia Academy Lady Patriots got back in the winning column as they returned to conference play last week. Following a tough nonconference loss to Miller School (ranked first in Division II) last Tuesday, the girls were able to rebound with a blowout victory over Christchurch on Thursday. Read more

AA Varsity Boys Clinch Tournament Championship
2012, Jan 2 – The Amelia Academy Boys Varsity Basketball team traveled to Newport News, Virginia for a three day Christmas tournament December 26-28. The tournament was held at Peninsula Catholic Academy. The Patriots came away with three straight wins, thereby winning the championship and landing three players on the all-tournament team. Christmas Chapel Held at AA
2012, Jan 2 – The Amelia Academy family gathered in the gymnasium to mark the end of the first semester in the annual Christmas chapel. As part of the program, held on December 16, several students were recognized for their achievements. Read more

Amelia Academy Lady Patriots Basketball with Three Wins
2011, Dec 12 – The Amelia Academy Lady Patriots put up huge numbers in three victories on the hardwood this past week. It started with a victory at Blessed Sacrament Huguenot on Monday, December 5, followed by back-to-back wins against Richmond Christian and Middleburg Academy over the weekend. Read more

Amelia Academy Gives Thanks and Honors Students for Achievement

AA JV Volleyball Team Wins Conference Tournament Title
2011, Nov 7 – After coming in first during their overall season, Amelia Academy’s JV girls volleyball team brought home the Virginia Commonwealth Conference tournament championship. The tournament was held on November 5 at the Fuqua School in Farmville. Read more and see season wrap-up pictures
Bus Driver Position Available
Amelia Academy is seeking a school bus driver to begin work in January. If you know of anyone that is interested with proper certification, please contact the Amelia Academy office. If anyone would like to obtain certification, we would be happy to assist.
AA Sells Florida Fruit
2011, Oct 14 – The Amelia Academy senior class and yearbook staff are again selling fresh fruit from Florida. The fruit comes in 4/5 bushel cartons and is scheduled for delivery the second week in December. The cost of the fruit is: navel oranges - $22.00; tangelos - $22.00; Hamlin oranges - $20.00; and pink grapefruit - $22.00. Fruit may be ordered by calling the school at 804-561-2270 or contacting a member of the senior class or yearbook staff. The deadline for ordering is Friday, November 18.

Win Conference Championship
2011, Oct 31 – The JV girls volleyball team has achieved a milestone as they were named Virginia Commonwealth Conference champion earlier this week. The team is looking forward to competing in the VCC tournament to be held this week, semi-finals at Amelia Academy on Wednesday and finals at Fuqua School in Farmville. Read more
AA’s Fall Festival on November 5
2011, Oct 17 – The turning leaves and cooler temperatures bring an array of community programs, including the upcoming Fall Festival of Amelia Academy. This year’s program, held November 5 from 1 to 4 p.m. on the Academy’s grounds, will feature an array of activities for all ages. Admission to the festival will be a can of food to be donated to the local food bank. Read more

Top Magazine Sellers Rewarded
2011, Oct 17 – Each year the Amelia Academy S.G.O. sponsors a Magazine drive. Students in grades four through the twelfth grade sold magazines to their neighbors, relatives and friends. Proceeds from the sales last year were used to help send students to HOBY and Boys and Girls State. Read more

2011, Oct 10 – Amelia Academy will host a Scholastic Book Fair from Friday, October 21 through Tuesday, November 2 from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Funds raised will help purchase non-fiction books for the media center. 2011, Oct 3 – Science students at Amelia Academy visited the Science Museum of Virginia on September 28. The ninth-grade students have been studying movements of the earth. One of the highlights of their visit was the prominent display of a Foucault pendulum that dominates the lobby of the Museum. Read more
Amelia Academy Students Visit Tredegar Iron Works
Amelia Academy’s Civil War History class visited the Civil War Center at Tredegar Iron Works in Richmond on September 21. The students, along with their teacher Mrs. Malinda Shanaberger, were given a unique insight into the events they are studying in the classroom. Read more
Amelia Academy Remembers 9/11 Tragedy
2011, Sep 12 – Students, many of whom were not yet born in 2001, gathered for the Academy’s fourth annual “9/11 Never Forget” program. Faculty, Board members, special guests, and the community joined in the special commemoration of the tenth anniversary of the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001. Guest speakers were Lt. Col. Jon Hatfield and Lt. General Samuel V. Wilson, and G. Dakota Jenkins, an Amelia Academy alumnus and senior at Hampden-Sydney College. Read more

Amelia Academy is in our second year of using the Instant Alert system. This system is used for emergency notifications, closings, activity announcements and distribution of general information. Amelia Academy Will Mark 10th Anniversary of 9/11 Tragedy
2011, Aug 23 – The Student Government Organization (SGO) of Amelia Academy will host the fourth annual 9/11: Never Forget program on September 9 at 8:30 a.m., on the front lawn. This year, the Academy joins more than ninety colleges and high schools holding observances across the nation to mark the tenth anniversary of the terrorist attacks. Read more

Basketball Clinic Held at Amelia Academy
2011, June 20 – Students from Amelia Academy and various schools kicked off their summer vacation at a two-day basketball clinic on June 13 and 14 in the Academy gymnasium. The Patriot Basketball Clinic was hosted by Frank and Malinda Shanaberger who both coach girls’ basketball and teach at the Academy. Read more »
Patriot Basketball Clinic for Rising Third – Eighth Graders
2011, May 9 – Amelia Academy will hold the annual Patriot Basketball Clinic on June 13 and 14, from 8:30 to 11 a.m., in the Academy gym. Two days of fun, great exercise, dribbling, defense, shooting skills and new friends! Beginners welcome. Cost is $35 which includes a t-shirt. Registration forms and payments are due May 23.
Four Amelia Academy Running Club Members Place in 5K Run for Hope
2011, May 16 – The Amelia Academy Running Club participated in the 2011 Run for Hope 5K Race held on May 14. T.W. O’Neal finished second overall in the male division. Kayla and Hannah Farnham finished third and first, respectively, in the 14 and under age group. Sponsor Belinda Farnham finish third overall in the female division. The AA Running Club meets several times a week after school during the spring.
Softball Season Ends with a Shutout!

Second Grade Mummifies Chicken
2011, May 16 – Second graders at Amelia Academy mummified a chicken as part of their study of Ancient Egypt. They used salt to dry the chicken, and then preserved it with oil and spices before wrapping it in cloth strips. Read more »
Amelia Academy Students Visit Virginia War Memorial
2011, Apr 18 – Students in Mrs. Malinda Shanaberger’s history classes at Amelia Academy visited the Virginia War Memorial in Richmond on April 14. “The experience allowed my students to understand more fully the sacrifices made by Virginians in times of war,” said Mrs. Shanaberger.

The third annual “Patriot Swing” Golf Tournament, a fund-raiser for the Amelia Academy LPT (League of Parents and Teachers), was held on April 2 at Manor Golf Club in Farmville. Twenty-three teams of alumni, parents, and friends participated in the event, which was sponsored by William and Stacy Scott. Read more »

Amelia Academy Students Recognized in AVA Forensics Competition
2011, Apr 11 – Amelia Academy hosted the Association of Virginia Academies Forensic Meet on March 31. More than 200 students from the member schools participated in the event, which included categories ranging from original speeches to poems and prose presentations to monologues and storytelling. Corbin Hill Places Second in District V.F.W. Contest
2011, Mar 7 – The Patriot’s Pen Writing Contest – sponsored annually by the V.F.W. Post 8759 – gives middle school students the opportunity to express their opinions on a patriotic theme and improve their writing skills while they compete for awards and prizes. The essay must be a contestant’s original work and a product of the contestant’s own thinking. This year’s theme was “Does Patriotism Still Matter?” Corbin H., a sixth-grade student at Amelia Academy, placed first locally and second in the district. He received $50 from the local V.F.W. Auxiliary and $200 from the district V.F.W. Corbin is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Tracey H. of Amelia.
Amelia Academy Hosting Brunswick Stew and Chicken Sale
The sophomore class of Amelia Academy is hosting a Brunswick Stew and Chicken Sale on March 19 from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. The prices are: $6 per quart for the homemade stew and $4 per quarter for the grilled chicken. Lady Patriots 26-0 Going into State Semifinals
2011, Mar 3 – The Varsity Lady Patriots Basketball team will face Williamsburg Christian in the State Semifinals on Friday at Benedictine in Richmond at 4:30 p.m. They defeated Blessed Sacrament Huguenot last night at home in the quarterfinals game with a final score of 56 - 39. VCC Tournament Title Dream Comes True for 25-0 Lady Patriots
2011, Feb 28 – On November 1, the Lady Patriots Varsity team from Amelia Academy met for their first basketball practice. They set their goals high and dared to dream big. On Saturday, February 26, they proved that dreams do come true. The girls won their VCC Championship game against Brunswick Academy by a score of 61-41, and clinched the VCC Tournament Title for the second time in four years.

2011, Feb 25 – The JV Girls' team will play in the VCC championship game at 2 p.m. on Saturday at Richard Bland College after they upset the first-place Richmond Christian team on Wednesday. 2011, Feb 25 – The Middle School Girls' Basketball team won last night 19-15. They play tonight at 6 p.m. at Millwood School for their third-consecutive undefeated season in the Millwood League.

2011, Feb 24 – Congratulations JV Girls' Basketball on your 38-35 victory over #1 undefeated Richmond Christian last night. Meghan scored 21 points and Autumn with 9 points. We play in the VCC Championships at 2 p.m. on Saturday at Richard Bland.
Earth Day Celebration Coming to AA!
2011, Feb 23 – The Science Club is selling Earth Day t-shirts for $10. The whole school will wear them on one day during the week of Earth Day (April 22) as part of our Earth Day Celebration. Many exciting, environmentally friendly activities are being planned so don’t miss out! The shirts are green with the “Celebrate Earth Day” slogan on the front and “Amelia Academy, Earth Day 2011” on the back. 2011, Feb 20 – The Lady Patriots take the VCC season championship and remain undefeated at 22-0. They play Christchurch in the quarterfinals of the VCC tournament on Monday at 6 p.m. in our home gym. Come out and support your Lady Patriots.
Team Effort Leads Lady Patriots to Two More Victories: 18-0!
2011, Feb 7 – The Lady Patriots from Amelia Academy remain undefeated and 10-0 in the VCC. Their latest victories came last week against Kenston Forest School and Blessed Sacrament Hugenot. The girls won 93-32 over the Lady Kavaliers from Kenston Forest on Monday January 31st at Amelia Academy. All ten players scored and contributed in this particular contest.

Amelia Academy is hosting a Mad Science Secret Agent Program (June 20 to 24) and a Super Duper Science Sampler Program (July 18 to 22). Amelia Academy Boys and Girls Basketball SWEEP Brunswick Academy
2011, Jan 24 – In a four-game evening of basketball on Friday, January 21, the Amelia Academy Patriots swept the Brunswick Academy teams on the Patriots’ home court. However, it was the Junior Varsity Boys who received the most cheers when they won in the final minute of their game. The win was made more special as a tribute to their coach, Joe Farnitano, who was hospitalized last week. In his absence, assistant coaches and students, junior Kyle Vincent and senior Jonathan Painter, stepped in to coach the team with the assistance of headmaster, Dr. George Martin. Read more »

2011, Jan 19 – Varsity Lady Patriots defeated Brunswick 70-35 on Tuesday. Kristyn scored 18 points, Lauren scored 15, Lexi with 13, Dasha with 10, Amara with 8 and Casey and Nina with 2 each. Lauren also brought home 12 rebounds and 9 blocks; Amara with 10 rebounds and 5 steals, and Kristyn had 4 blocks and 4 rebounds. Congratulations Lady Patriots!
Varsity Patriots defeated Brunswick 47-39, the JV Lady Patriots defeated Brunswick 44-26, and the JV Patriots were defeated 31-52.
Amelia Academy Lady Patriots Winning Streak at Nine
2011, Jan 10 – The Lady Patriots chalked up two more wins this past week, which increased their record to 9-0 overall and 2-0 in the Virginia Commonwealth Conference (VCC). The ladies from Amelia Academy are in the Virginia Independent State Girls’ Basketball Association and are currently ranked second in the state rankings as of January 4. Read more »
Triple Victories for Amelia Academy Basketball
2011, Jan 10 – On Saturday, the Middle School Lady Patriots defeated CVHAA at Millwood with a 22-16 final score. Later in the day, the Patriots hosted Stonebridge with a 66-50 victory for the Boys’ Varsity. Reid scored 19 points, Jan with 16, Austin with 14 and Milos with 12. The Varsity Girls’ also won with a final score of 75-32. Kristyn made 5 three-point shots with a total of 21 points for the game. Amara scored 15 points and 19 rebounds. Great job Patriots!

2011, Jan 7 – Congratulations JV and Varsity Lady Patriots on your victories over Christchurch last night. The JV Girls out-scored their opponent with a 36-29 victory. Rickylyn scored 15 points and Mikayla scored 8. The Varsity Girls’ Basketball team continued their undefeated season with an 82-13 victory. Kristyn hit six three-pointers with a total of 24 points, Amara scored 18, and Lauren and Casey with 10 each. Great job ladies!

2011, Jan 4 – The Amelia Academy varsity boys' basketball team scored a 90-38 win over Victory Christian Academy on Tuesday. Milos scored 22 points, Josh with 11, and Jan and Austin scored 10 each. Way to go Patriots!
Lady Patriots Still Undefeated
2011, Jan 3 – The Amelia Academy girls’ varsity basketball team drove the short distance to Farmville to participate in the Fuqua School Christmas Tournament on December 28 and 29. A one-day snow delay didn't slow down the Lady Patriots as they maintained their undefeated record, boosting it to 7-0 overall and 1-0 in the VCC Conference. Read more »

Canned Food Drive
2010.11.29 — The Student Government Organization is helping Love Covenant Church in a canned food drive this year. We hope that everyone will participate and have fun doing it. We will be collecting nonperishable food items in each classroom from November 29 through December 6. There will be a winner in lower school and a winner in middle and upper school for the most cans collected. Bring in all of those leftover cans from your Thanksgiving feast and help out a few families in need. We thank you for your contributions to our charity. Thanksgiving Chapel Service Held at Amelia Academy
2010.11.29 – Students, faculty, and special guests “gathered together” on Wednesday, November 24, for a special chapel service. In the opening remarks, Dallas Lewis, a member of the faculty and Executive Director, spoke about this being a time to give thanks for family and friends. Dr. George Martin, headmaster, echoed her comments and said he also wanted to give thanks for his new role at the Academy this year. Read more »

The Amelia Academy Athletic Boosters Club will hold its annual spaghetti dinner and live auction fundraiser on Friday, November 19, in the gymnasium. Fall Festival Committee Thanks You!
2010.11.08 – The LPT and Fall Festival Committee would like to thank everyone who participated in the Fall Festival. It was a great day! The kids had a blast. Our silent auction and quilt raffle were big hits as well as the Rock Wall. We will post some pics to the Web site later in the week. Thank you all again, with out your help the Festival would not be possible.
Amelia Academy Hosts Scholastic Bowl
2010.10.18 – It was a “battle of the brains” at Amelia Academy last Wednesday (October 13) afternoon as the seven Association of Virginia Academies (AVA) gathered for the first of four Scholastic Bowl competitions this year. Tidewater Academy was the overall winner of the event in which teams of four representing the AVA schools compete in seven rounds. Read more
Fresh Florida Fruit for Sale

Alum Chris Hughes Scores First Collegiate Soccer Goal
Chris Hughes, 2010 Amelia Academy graduate, scored his first collegiate goal and the lone goal of the soccer game on Friday, September 24. Way to go Chris! The Bluefield Rams lost to West Virginia Tech 4-1.

2010 Volleyball Season Underway
Congratulations Lady Patriots for an exciting start to the 2010 volleyball season. An exceptional game for our JV team with a 2-1 victory over Southampton Academy and Varsity gave last year’s VCC champions a run for their money with a 1-3 loss. Great job ladies!
