Veterans Day Program Coming in November

Parents,

This year the Academy's Veterans Day program will be on November 14 and will begin at 7 p.m.

It was suggested that we incorporate into our program something about the canteens that dotted the U.S. during WWII. The railroads during this period moved an incredible number of soldiers across our nation. Some were going home for a brief visit before being deployed; others were reporting for duty.  Many had only enough money for a ticket. Volunteers at over 125 cities operated trackside canteens and supplied the troops with free food, drink, magazines, newspapers, writing supplies, friendly smiles and welcoming words.

We plan on placing a banner over the gym entrance saying "Welcome to the USO Canteen" and wanted to have middle school students greet the veterans, take them to their seats, and offer them refreshments. It would be nice if these students could dress up in period costumes.  Pictures are provided to give you some ideas. I don't mean for anyone to feel they have to get elaborate. Keep it simple and easy. I need for those students acting as the "volunteers" to be at the gym by 6:30 that evening. These same students will also come on the stage and sing the service songs of the five branches while we honor our attending veterans by having them stand while we give them a carnation.

I would like to get an accurate count of how many students will be able to participate, so I am asking that you fill out the bottom portion of this letter and return it to me.

Thanks, and if you have any suggestions or would like to help in any way, please give me a call. My home phone is 561-4124.

Sincerely,

Carolyn Moseley
