AA Honors Local Veterans
Nov. 16, 2009 – Veterans from the area were honored by Amelia Academy at the annual Veteran's Day program held on Saturday, November 14, in the school gymnasium. Masters of ceremonies were members of the junior class, Bob A., Nina B., and Lexi P. To open the program, the kindergarten class led the gathering in the Pledge of Allegiance, and Mrs. Angie Anderson sang The National Anthem. Pre-kindergarten and kindergarten classes then saluted the veterans with songs and dances. Students in grades one through five sang a song of appreciation. During the singing of the five service songs by students in the middle school, the veterans were presented with a carnation to express gratitude for their military service.
This year's program featured a World War II canteen theme. Program director Carolyn Moseley described the program as a trip back to a time during the war when soldiers traveling by train were served food by townspeople across the nation.
Approximately 50 local veterans attended the program this year. Students in period costumes served them refreshments provided by the Academy's Booster Club. A flag cake created by the Hotel Amelia and General Store was a special feature.
A highlight of this year's program was a powerpoint presentation of the veterans "The Way They Were" with photographs and years of service going back to World War II and continuing up to the veterans of the present conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan.
First graders Kyla, Jacob and Presley salute our Veterans.
