Amelia Academy Hosts Australian Basketball Teams
2010, Jan 11 – During the past week, Amelia Academy students, parents and teachers hosted Australian basketball teams. The girls and boys varsity teams played their Aussie counterparts in games on January 6 and January 9. The teams and their coaches enjoyed a dinner together and the Australians stayed in the homes of Academy families.
Before each game, the players exchanged gifts. The Australians also signed autographs for the younger Academy students. The teams enjoyed comparing cultures and exchanged e-mail addresses. As girls varsity assistant coach Malinda Owens said, "This was a great opportunity for our students to get to know students their own age from another area of the world."
The Australian students are members of the Horizon Basketball League. As part of their summer basketball program, they have visited college campuses, attended NBA basketball games and played scholastic teams in the United States.
