Amelia Academy Students Meet the Voice Behind
A Moment in Time

The conversation was rich on the drive home from the University of Richmond on Monday, October 4.  “I was amazed to learn that a two minute radio history lesson takes twelve hours to prepare,” commented Clay S.  Fellow classmate Zach L. chimed in, “What about his suggestion to write three drafts of every assigned paper?”

These comments arose from a conversation between nine Amelia Academy students and Dr. Dan Roberts, host and executive producer of A Moment in Time and other public history projects.   Dr. Roberts also serves as Chair of the Liberal Arts program of the School of Continuing Studies at the University of Richmond.

Not only did these Amelia Academy students who are taking a Leadership Skills class with Patti Carey polish their communication skills by interviewing Dan Roberts, each also recorded a prepared presentation at the University’s Weinstein-Jecklin Speech Center.  “I was nervous about making the presentation, but being recorded was easier than I thought it would be,” stated Calen Foster.

In addition, leadership class students toured the library, the chapel, and several state-of-the-art classrooms.  After having lunch in the University’s award-winning dining hall, AA students met with a panel of Business Communications students to discuss how they could better prepare for college and careers.

The majority of the college students cited that learning how to manage their time was the hardest transition from high school to college.  They also mentioned the value of studying in small groups.   Other advice offered included:  “Understand that professors do not chase after you trying to get homework assignments in college.”

At the end of the day, sophomore Mikayla B. said that she was inspired by her exposure to an extraordinary college experience.
