Thanksgiving Chapel Service Held at Amelia Academy

Students, faculty, and special guests “gathered together” on Wednesday, November 24, for a special chapel service. In the opening remarks, Dallas Lewis, a member of the faculty and Executive Director, spoke about this being a time to give thanks for family and friends. Dr. George Martin, headmaster, echoed her comments and said he also wanted to give thanks for his new role at the Academy this year.

Several students were recognized for special achievements during the service. Senior Lexi P. was awarded the Daughters of the American Revolution Good Citizenship Award, which is sponsored by the James Allen Chapter. This honor is extended annually to a member of the senior class who exhibits the qualities of dependability, service, leadership, and patriotism to an outstanding degree.

VFW post 8759 Commander Paul Blythe then announced that junior Alex R. placed third in this year’s Voice of Democracy essay contest. Linda Hartman, president of the Post’s Ladies’ Auxiliary, presented awards to three winners in the Patriot Pen essay contest. Eighth-grader Andrew C. received third place and a check for $20; Seventh-grader Andrew P. received second place and a check for $30. First place and a check for $50 went to Corbin H., who is in the sixth grade.

Josh P., a senior at the Academy, introduced Rev. Gene Tatum, the guest speaker for the service. A retired Methodist pastor, Rev. Tatum currently resides in Amelia with his wife, Mary Nell Blanton Tatum. Mrs. Tatum graduated from the Academy in 1971. Among other churches he served, Rev. Tatum was pastor of Trinity/Tabernacle Methodist Church in Amelia from 1979-1987.

Rev. Tatum encouraged everyone to stop and count their blessings. He also especially asked that students recognize the sacrifices of their parents to provide them with an education.Lexi
