Amelia Academy Lady Patriots Winning Streak at Nine

2011, Jan 10 – The Lady Patriots chalked up two more wins this past week, which increased their record to 9-0 overall and 2-0 in the Virginia Commonwealth Conference (VCC). The ladies from Amelia Academy are in the Virginia Independent State Girls’ Basketball Association and are currently ranked second in the state rankings as of January 4.
The girls’ varsity team enjoyed a conference win at home against Christchurch on Thursday, January 6. The final score was 82 - 13 with sophomore Kristyn C. hitting six three-point shots and leading the team with 24 points and eight rebounds. Second in scoring was junior Amara E. with 18 points, including two three-pointers. The V. sisters (junior Lauren and freshman Casey) rounded out the top four scorers with Lauren at 10 points and five blocks and Casey with 10 points and seven rebounds. Seniors Lexi P. and Nina B. contributed to the win with eight points each.
On Saturday, January 8, the Lady Patriots beat eighth-ranked Stonebridge with a score of 75-32. “The win against Stonebridge further proves that these ladies are legitimate at the conference and state level. The entire team is capable of scoring significant numbers and showed that to a packed gymnasium on Saturday. I don’t really have a ‘bench’ this year. All the girls are vital contributors,” said Coach Frank Shanaberger.
Kristyn made five three-pointers in this game bringing her total number of three-point shots to 24 this season. She scored 21 points on Saturday and also made five assists. Amara had 15 points, 19 rebounds, five steals, and three assists while Lauren V. scored 10 points, had 11 rebounds and three assists. Other scorers were Lexi with nine, Darlene H. with eight, Nina with five, Casey V. with five, and Evie P. with two.
The team will be on the road in upcoming games at Tidewater Academy on January 11 and Fuqua School on January 15. The Fuqua game will be broadcast live on 92.9FM WVHL, beginning at 6:15 p.m.
