By Malinda Shanaberger

The Lady Patriots from Amelia Academy remain undefeated and 10-0 in the VCC.  Their latest victories came last week against Kenston Forest School and Blessed Sacrament Hugenot.  The girls won 93-32 over the Lady Kavaliers from Kenston Forest on Monday January 31st at Amelia Academy.  All ten players scored and contributed in this particular contest.

“It was so great to see the entire team come together and watch the girls that come off the bench play such a great second half and continue to score and execute our style of basketball. We will need all the girls to contribute when we get to the state playoffs, if we are going to be successful at that level,” said Head Coach Frank Shanaberger. The Lady Patriots scored and contributed as follows: Lauren Vugteveen with 24 points and 12 rebounds; Kristyn Carney with 15 points (3 three-pointers) and 6 assists; Darlene Hall with 14 points, 9 rebounds and 4 steals; Dasha Sorokina with 12 points, 9 rebounds, 5 assists and 4 steals; Casey Vugteveen with 9 points and 5 rebounds; Lexi Pemberton with 4 points, 10 assists and 5 rebounds; Amara Ezell with 4 points, 10 rebounds and 3 assists; Nina Bowen with 4 points, 6 rebounds and 4 steals; Evie Painter with 4 points and 6 rebounds; and Holly Steele with 3 points.

The Lady Patriots visited their neighboring county to play Blessed Sacrament Huguenot in Powhatan on Thursday night.  They came up victorious 65-41 over the Lady Knights.  Amara Ezell was one assist away from a “triple double” which is very difficult to attain at any level of basketball. Amara lead the team with 22 points, 16 rebounds, 9 assists and 4 steals.  Also with a “double double” was Lauren Vugteveen with 14 points, 13 rebounds and 3 blocked shots.  The remaining scorers were Lexi Pemberton with 8 points, 4 steals and 3 assists; Dasha Sorokina with 7 points, 3 steals, 3 assists and 3 rebounds; Kristyn Carney with 5 points; and Nina Bowen with 5 points and 5 rebounds.

The middle school and junior varsity girls from Amelia Academy also won their matchups with Blessed Sacrament, making it a clean sweep for the Lady Patriots.  They will be in action again on Monday, February 7, at home against Tidewater Academy and again on Friday against Fuqua School in a four game event (boys and girls teams are playing Friday night).
