Amelia Academy Students Visit Virginia War Memorial

2011, Apr 18 – Students in Mrs. Malinda Shanaberger’s history classes at Amelia Academy visited the Virginia War Memorial in Richmond on April 14.  “The experience allowed my students to understand more fully the sacrifices made by Virginians in times of war,” said Mrs. Shanaberger.

The students saw a film on Allied POWs in Germany. They learned about the experiences of a soldier from Lt. Col. Tarantino, a volunteer at the War Memorial, who served in World War II, Korea, and Vietnam. The students performed a wreath memorial service at the eternal flame of the Memory statue. They also toured the education center named in honor of Paul and Phyllis Galanti. A former Navy pilot, Galanti spent seven years as a POW in Vietnam.

Galanti, who was a familiar face for the Academy students, was the speaker at the Academy’s “911 Never Forget” ceremony last September.

The Academy students were very well received by the staff at the Virginia War Memorial. One who wrote to congratulate them, Mr. Jim Albertson, sent this message: “… the students are exactly what I liked about teaching for 41 years. [They were] interested, polite and knew their subject matter.” Academy Headmaster Mr. James Grizzard said, “It is always wonderful when others speak about our students in such a splendid manner.”
