Amelia Academy Students Visit Tredegar Iron Works

Amelia Academy’s Civil War History class visited the Civil War Center at Tredegar Iron Works in Richmond on September 21. The students, along with their teacher Mrs. Malinda Shanaberger, were given a unique insight into the events they are studying in the classroom. During a tour of artifacts from the War, each student explored the events of 1861-1865 that occurred during their birth month.
Nine students simulated firing a cannon. They learned how much time it took to get off one shot as well as the danger involved in the process.

The students wrapped up their visit by listening to narrations of letters from soldiers and their families.

“The program brought to life the horrors of the Civil War from both the perspective of the soldier and those on the home front,” said Mrs. Shanaberger.
